PSPad Editor

PSPad editor is a programmers editor with support for multiple syntax highlighting profiles. It comes with a hex editor, CP conversion, text differences, templates, macros, spellcheck option, auto-completion, Code Explorer and much more. The program is pre-configured for the most popular programming languages (VB, C++, SQL, PHP, ASP, Python etc.) and you can further customize the syntax settings. PSPad includes several additional tools that are especially useful for HTML editing (compress, format code) and also integrates TopStyle Lite and TidyHTML. The program can be used as IDE for any compiler. Additional features include support for project, file browsing, custom shortcuts, built-in FTP client to edit files on the server and much more.

RJ TextEd

RJ TextEd is a full featured text editor with Unicode support, syntax highlighting and code folding. The functionality extends well beyond text files and includes support for common HTML editing features with integrated preview, spell checking, auto completion, HTML validation, templates and more. The program also includes a CSS editor and a dual pane file commander, , as well as a FTP client to upload your files and several small tools to help with daily tasks (color picker, unit converter and others).

CSVed

CSVed allows you to manipulate any CSV file, separated with any separator. The contents of the CSV file is visible in a list view window that allows you to easily edit, add, insert, delete and move the items, as if they were in a database table. You can delete rows and add columns or rearrange the column order. In addition, you can remove duplicates and repair files or use the built in search features to find specific records. CSVed also offers search and replace, export to XML and more. If you are frequently working with CSV files, this is an extremely handy tool!

UltraEdit

WinHEX

WinHex is a universal hexadecimal editor, particularly helpful in the realm of computer forensics, data recovery, low-level data processing, and IT security. An advanced tool for everyday and emergency use: inspect and edit all kinds of files, recover deleted files or lost data from hard drives with corrupt file systems or from digital camera cards.

MemPad

MemPad is a plain text outliner and note taking program with a structured index. All pages are stored in a single file. The program offers standard editing functions including cut, copy, paste, undo, date/time insert, drag&drop, and supports Web links as well as network and local file or folder links (full path not required) and internal page links. Environmental variables can be used in file links to run programs, for example. The index structure can be modified with buttons, context menu or hotkeys. Cut&paste functions and quick node moving. MemPad always saves data without prompting (when closing Mempad or opening another file). Optional auto save (every 4 minutes). Automatic backup (can be disabled by option); restore last backup, reload file. Search through all pages or within a node; continue searching forwards or backwards. Win32Pad

Win32Pad is a replacement for the default Windows notepad with a programmer in mind. It offers several enhancements, including unlimited file size, line numbers, recent file list, file change notification, WIN/MAC/UNIX format support, system tray icon and more. The program also offers support for URLs, it automatically highlights them and lets you click on them to launch your browser. Additional features include drag and drop, Find/Replace, Goto Line, time stamp and more. Amazingly small with 70 kb, including the installer.

Boxer Text Editor

CatsCradle

CatsCradle is an aid for language translators that provides an easy way to translate web pages. While it does not do any translation, it extracts the text out of evey page and presents it in an easy to editable overview that allows you to translate the text portions without having to deal with any HTML code or other distractions. The built-in editing screen allows for side-by-side editing, as well as optional real-time browser preview of the translated page. Additional features include a built in glossary that can suggest appropriate words and phrases while you are translating, project file catalog with word count and more. CatsCradle can also handle .hhc and .hhk files for translating of .chm help files. And of course, you can also use the tool to edit text on any web page without translating edit, so it can a also handy tool for webmasters that need some quick no-code text editing.

EditPlus2

EditPlus is an Internet-ready 32-bit text editor, HTML editor and programmers editor for Windows. While it can serve as a good replacement for Notepad, it also offers many powerful features for Web page authors and programmers.

ZuluPad

ZuluPad is a notepad-type editor that combines simple notes management with a desktop wiki concept that allows you to link words to additional content within the same zulu file. To link a word, you can simply highlight it and click the Link button in the toolbar to open a new page within the document where you can enter any information related to the linked word (definitions, contact details etc.). Once you have linked a word within a zulu file, the same word will automatically be cross-referenced on any pother page in the same document. A zulu file can have unlimited pages and links, and everything is contained within a sigle file. The actual text editing features are very basic though, ZuluPad does not support text formatting, font settings and many other features usually found in text editors.

TextPad

TextPad is a full-featured text editor offering a spelling checker, macros, and powerful formatting and file-storage options. TextPad has been implemented according to the Windows XP user interface guidelines, so excellent attention has been paid to making it easy for both beginners and experienced users. In-context help is available for all commands, and in-context menus pop up with the right mouse button. The Windows multiple-document interface allows multiple files to be edited simultaneously, with up to two views on each file. Text can be dragged and dropped among files.

NotePro

If you need to create or edit text files and want something with more options than the default Notepad or WordPad programs that come with Windows but don't need the power and complexity of a full-fledged word-processor, check out NotePro. Although it has many powerful features typically found in a word-processor, it's very simple to use.

MoonEdit

MoonEdit enables cooperative multi-user text editing over the Internet or LAN. The program is basically a text editor that enables you to host a file for editing, and other users (also using MoonEdit) can connect to the file and edit the file with you. Each user is listed in the status bar and is assigned a distinctive color that highlights the segments that were edited by him. All cursor movements and text changes are simultaneously visible on the screen by all users. MoonEdit allows you to share individual files, or entire directories. Other features include a built-in calculator to solve mathematical functions and even a musical sequencer that can translate and play musical notes.

EditPlus

QJot

QJot is a small, rich text editor that can open and save .doc files. It offers most common editing functions, including text formatting, inserted images and objects, paragraph/line spacing, undo and more. It supports drag and drop, offers a recent documents list, word count and more. QJot also includes a spell checker, however it was not working properly during our review.

SpeedTextPad

This program is a specialized text editor designed specifically for free-writing. Besides standard text editor functions, specialized features include: Always on Top window, remembers window size and position, invisible ink to avoid distraction while free-writing, built-in customizable timer with sound and dialog alert, and standard Courier 10 points font. It can be run from the hard disk or from a USB drive and does not use the Windows registry.

ConTEXT

ConTEXT is a small, fast and powerful text editor, developed mainly to serve as secondary tool for software developers. It offers syntax highlighting support for the most popular scripting languages, inclding HTML, PHP, Java, VB, SQL, Python, Perl and many others - and of course plain .txt files. It also includes a macro recorder, project support, bookmarks and much more. ConTEXT is highly customizable and allows you to change syntax highlighting colors, cursor shapes, right margin, gutter, line spacing as well as user definable execution keys and other things. Additional features include find/replace, compiler support, code templates, file explorer and others.

Power Edit

Power Edit contains all the usual features expected of text editors and several that are unique. The search and replace function is especially powerful, including regular expression handling as well as soundex and approximate searches, which are found in few if any other editors. In addition, the program includes many text manipulation functions which are difficult to find elsewhere, such as removal of leading spaces, position-based text deletion, deletion of blank lines, conversion of data between fixed width and delimited formats, and extraction of e-mail addresses and Internet URLs.

nPad2

nPad2 is a notepad-like source viewer and editor with support for syntax highlighting (HTML, PHP, ASP, C++, Object Pascal, Java, Basic). It is mostly intended as a notepad replacement,source code viewer or as a portable editor for small projects. In addition to the syntax highlighting, it also offers line numbers, special character display, search/replace and supports drag and drop.

GridinSoft Notepad

GridinSoft Notepad is a text editor with syntax highlighting for more than 50 file types (C/C++, HTML, ASP, PHP, Perl etc.), as well as a built-in spell checker and HEX editor. Additional features include Unicode support, code templates, bookmarks, code to HTML export, regular expression search and more.

Notepad SX

NotePad SX is a notepad replacement text editor that offers a tabbed interface and a variety of text processing functions. You can convert cases, sort lines, generate random text, reverse text, trim lines, remove HTML/XML tags and more. The program also supports text-to-speech synthesis (Microsoft Agent) and offers several interface styles to choose from.

DocPad

DocPad is a feature-rich alternative to Notepad. In addition to the standard features, it offers many advantages including a 10-level undo system, alphabetization, block indent/unindent, bookmark, case conversion, encoding conversion, file history, jump to line, jump to offset, keyboard macros, search and replace, spell checker, statistics, variable pitch font, and more. AreaEditor

This allows you to use your favorite text editor to write long text in Internet Explorer. It shows the "Edit" menu to launch an external editor in the context menu.

AscToHTM

This program converts text files into HTML pages. The software uses advanced text-recognition algorithms to detect the headings, bullets, indentation levels, emphasized text, tables and ASCII art in the original text. The result is a HTML page that reflects the structure of the original. AscToHTM detects many types of headings which are then used to generate a hyperlinked contents list for your file. The detected headings may then be used to split large files into a set of smaller pages, or a linked set frames.

WebCore Designer 2005
