Beware however that the interface needs getting used to, and the program has a rather steep learning curve.

You can also apply masks and background images to further enhance the morphing effect. FantaMorph comes with good documentation and several samples included. Photobie

Photobie is an image editor that offers all the standard editing and paint tools, as well as image layers and Photoshop (.8bf) plug-ins as well s several other features that are normally not found in free image editors. Image Genius also includes a website gallery wizard which will guide you through the process of creating an image gallery for your website.

Some additional features include CD/DVD burning, posting to photo blogs, built-in thumbnail browser and batch processing including resize, change format, captions/watermarks, remove EXIF, rename, and change timestamp.

Recomposit

Recomposit is a digital matting and composition tool, that enables you to replace backgrounds in photos. It can work in chroma key mode (Bluescreen) or based on a manual inside/outside edge selection by the user that separates the subject from the background. The program works well, especially with chroma key backgrounds, but requires a lot of patience since interface is slow and not very intuitive.

ArcSoft PhotoStudio Darkroom

The program offers both professionals and hobbyists a complete set of enhancement tools and export options inside a thoughtfully-designed, professional user interface. ViewMinder Express

An image manager consisting of a metadata editor, a relational database and a search engine, as well as a simple image editor. AKVIS Enhancer

AKVIS Enhancer is a Photoshop compatible plug-in that helps you improve your images by improving textures and revealing fine details. It can improve appearance of underexposed, overexposed and mid-tone areas of a photo without manipulating exposure settings. It achieves this by intensifying color transitions between pixels, rather than overall brightness or contrast adjustments. AKVIS Enhancer allows you to customize the intensity of the manipulation, as well as specific adjustments. We have seen some very good results, even images that looked fine before had some significant improvements in overall details and appearance.

Abrosoft FantaFace Mixer

Abrosoft FantaFace Mixer enables you to blend multiple portraits and mix them into a unique, synthetic composition. The program can automatically extract basic facial features and crop images to a suitable size. Additional point editing allows you to fine-tune facial features for better alignment. Once you have extracted and tuned the faces from your photos, you can use slider controls to mix the face layers and adjust head shapes using image morphing and blending techniques. Since clothing and hair cannot always be mixed realistically, the program includes options for masks, background images and lighting adjustments that allow you to artistically cover up any non-facial parts of the image. You can load existing images from your computer, and the program can also import snapshots directly from your webcam. FantaFace Mixer supports most image formats including BMP, JPEG, TIFF, PNG, GIF, TGA, PCX, as well as 32-bit alpha formats.

CBN Selector

CONTORT is a fun program for distorting pictures and producing surreal effects. Try it with a close-up human portrait of a friend or family. LightZone

LightZone is a unique photo editor that enables you to correct and retouch your photos without the need for extended knowledge of editing routines, layers and other techniques. It is partly based on Ansel Adams`s Zone System and combines zone mapping, white balance adjustments, contrast masks, channel mixer and other advanced editing techniques into an easy to use system that allows you to make selections and draw masks directly on the image. Lightzone automates color management and includes RAW conversion and editing for popular RAW formats. The program can output images to 8/16 bits TIFF, PNG or JPEG format.

CinePaint

CinePaint is a collection of free open source software tools for deep paint manipulation and image processing. CinePaint is used for motion picture frame-by-frame retouching, dirt removal, wire rig removal, render repair, background plates, and 3d model textures. It's been used on many feature films, including The Last Samurai where it was used to add flying arrows. It's also being used by pro photographers who need excellenter color fidelity than is available in other tools.

Photo Pos Pro allows you easily create, edit, enhance, print, and manipulate your digital photos and computer graphics, and easily create eye-catching graphics. The software includes complete help system, free step-by-step tutorials and dozens of pre-made photo frames, patterns, textures, and shapes - all to accelerate your work and make it fun and easy.

NeoPaint

NeoPaint is a powerful paint and image editor, with support for Animated GIF, JPEG, BMP, ICO, PCX, TIF and more. It offers many paint and photo retouching tools, natural media and custom brushes, 2D/3D shapes, soften, sharpen, special effects, masking, textures, color separations, stamps, multi-level undo, rulers, grids and gradients and more. It also includes an image browser and a screen capture capture utility. NeoPaint is a well featured image editor - what really bothered me though, were the oversized and non-customizable tool button bars, that take up a large amount of the interface.

Corel Painter has a step learning curve for most of the advanced features and the purchased version (not this trial) includes 11 hours of movie-based training.

You can also add comments, insert t a timestamp and organize images in collections. The images can be processed individually or in batch mode for all images in a collection. SnapTouch is easy to use and suitable for novice users, however it only offers the most basic image editing options.

MakeUp Pilot is extremely simplistic, and will probably not appeal to more advanced users, as there are much better values available that offer touch-up as part of their much extended feature set. If you`re in a hurry and have money to burn, give it a try, otherwise we`ll suggest to try some others first.
